This is the second installment of Biennial Southwest at The Albuquerque Museum, and it will be another fascinating exhibition of contemporary art currently being produced in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. Artists competed for cash awards totaling $10,500 in a variety of categories, and the
winners will be announced at the opening on September 28. Dr. Stephanie Hanor, Senior Curator and Curatorial Department Head for the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego is the juror for this year’s exhibition.

A public opening for the exhibition will be from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, September 28. A panel discussion entitled “State of The Art” will explore why contemporary art is created and what it means to us. The panel will be moderated by Andrew Connors, Chair of the Visual Arts Department, Albuquerque Academy, will include the exhibition juror, Dr. Stephanie Hanor, and artist participants in the exhibition, and is scheduled for 1 pm, followed by select artists in the gallery for informal discussions of their work from 2 to 4 pm. Participating artists include Brad Adams, Lea Anderson, Maude Andrade, Julia M. Barello, Jonathan Blaustein, Joy M. Campbell, Suzi Davidoff, Geoffrey Gorman, Roberta Harris, Daniel Huntsinger, Jeff Krueger, Ted Larsen, Stephanie Lerma, Reg Loving, Tess McArdle, Shawn Pham-Warrick, David Polka, H.Y. Russell, Lynne Rutzky, Lu Sage, Rupama Schwartz, and Brandon Soder.

Artists will talk about their works and the contemporary art scene on Sundays at 1 pm. These include Michael Mulno on October 12, Julia Barello on November 2, and Catherine Winkler Rayroud on November 23. There will also be an artist demonstration by Mary Sweet on woodblock printing on Wednesday, October 1 from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.
The artwork in Biennial Southwest ‘08 includes large site installations, paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and alternative media. Douglas Fairfield, former Curator of Art at The Albuquerque Museum and exhibition organizer, sees this exhibition “as a changing force in the way contemporary art is perceived in New Mexico.” Biennial Southwest ‘08 will remain on display at the museum through November 30.
