FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO REMAIN OPEN DURING
"MILLION MAN MARCH";
OPM URGES MANAGEMENT FLEXIBILITY

Washington, D.C. -- Office of Personnel Management Director Jim King has urged Executive Branch agencies to use a combination of common sense and flexible management tools to keep government offices staffed and open during the "Million Man March" in Washington, D.C. on Monday, October 16.

In a memorandum to federal Directors of Personnel, King welcomed march participants to the nation's capital and suggested agencies encourage employees to make use of public transportation and allow extra time for travel to work.

To "minimize disruption of services to taxpayers," King added that agencies are encouraged to use workplace flexibilities, such as allowing employees to take annual leave or stagger reporting times to the office.

The use of workplace flexibilities proved valuable and popular with employees and their agencies during Korean War Memorial dedication events that drew tens-of-thousands of veterans and their families to Washington earlier this year.
