Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Janice Lachance will visit California State University in Bakersfield, California, as part of a nationwide effort to boost Hispanic representation in the federal workforce.
Last spring, OPM entered into a partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) to increase recruitment efforts at HACU institutions. According to OPMs annual report to Congress on the Federal Equal Opportunity Recruitment Program, Hispanics remain the only underrepresented minority group in the federal government. Presently, they represent 6 percent of the federal civilian workforce, roughly half their representation in the civilian labor force.
As part of this recruitment effort, California State University, received a touch screen computer that provides nationwide federal job information. The University has an Hispanic-American enrollment population of 26 percent. The touch screen computers provide all students, faculty members, and the community with federal job listings that are updated daily, information on the Presidential Management Intern program, and the federal governments summer employment program.
OPM Director Lachance, who launched a nine-point plan to reverse Hispanic underrepresentation in September 1997, said, President Clinton and his Administration are committed to creating a government that looks like America. With the challenges of the next century upon us, now more than ever, we need to recruit the best and brightest from everywhere in America.
Director Lachance will demonstrate the touch screen computer on:
Ms. Lachance will be available to meet with media before and immediately after the demonstration. Interested media should contact Mary Ann Maloney at (202) 606-1800.
