Success Stories: DHS Adjusts to UK Bomb Plot, Bans Liquids

Objective: Continue to Protect Our Nation from Dangerous Goods

Situation   Action
  • Aug 10, 2006: “Major terrorist plot” to blow up airplanes in flight bound for the U.S. from the U.K.
  • British make arrests after concluding terrorists would soon try to stage their suicide attacks Terrorists’ plot: smuggle liquid explosive materials aboard 10 planes in carry-on baggage and assemble bombs onboard
 
  • DHS raises threat level for aviation to Severe, or RED; nation’s threat level to High, or ORANGE
  • TSA coordinates response with Federal partners, airport authorities and commercial airlines
  • TSA prohibits all liquids from being carried on airplanes due to the nature of the threat
  • Change occurs at every U.S. airport within hours
Result  
  • Additional security measures within airports and at screening checkpoints are implemented
  • TSA response to plot is quick, measured and assures aviation system remains safe and secure
  • Travelers are able to go about their plans safely and confidently
  • TSA reviews & adjusts policy as threat subsides

Starting Sep 26, 2006 - Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.
