Success Stories: DHS Support for FBI’s Operation to Disrupt Fort Dix Plot

Situation   Action
  • 2005: Six immigrant men living in the Philadelphia area for years, worshipping at moderate mosques and working blue-collar jobs form a terrorist cell after being "inspired" by Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda
  • Cell targets Fort Dix, a post in NJ 25 miles east of Philadelphia that is used primarily to train reservists
  • 'Fort Dix Six' (FD6) objective: to kill “as many American soldiers as possible“
 
  • January 2006: A clerk calls police because of jihad training videos FD6 want transferred to a DVD
  • Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF): FBI, DHS and local authorities begin investigation immediately
  • March 2006: an FBI informant establishes a relationship with one of the men in the videotape
  • JTTF have two informants infiltrate the terrorist cell
Result    
  • May 7, 2007: JTTF arrest FD6 as they try to buy automatic assault weapons and grenades
  • Terror plot is disrupted by JTTF before it takes place
  • Five of FD6 are charged with conspiring to kill uniformed military personnel; sixth is charged with helping illegal immigrants obtain weapons
  • Five face life in prison, the sixth faces 10 years

The “Fort Dix Six” had scouted out Fort Monmouth, Dover Air Force Base, Lakehurst Naval Air Station and the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard before targeting Fort Dix, a base that is Used to mobilize troops to Iraq
