Objective: Continue to Protect our Nation from Dangerous People

Situation   Action
  • Thousands attempting to cross into U.S. daily along Southwest Border (SWB) between ports of entry
  • U.S.-Mexican Border: tougher enforcement discouraging people from illegally crossing
  • U.S. Border Patrol: dramatic decrease in attempted crossings, evidence in Mexico of the same

  • Increased presence, infrastructure & technology
  • 1,000 new U.S. Border Patrol agents hired in 2006
  • 6,000 National Guard as armed sentinels on SWB
  • $1 Billion earmarked for fencing, barriers, sensors and surveillance equipment
Result   "The Border Patrol was everywhere"
  • Sasabe, Mexico: staging area losing business as U.S. Border Patrol cracks down
  • Mexico reports decrease in Sasabe of 2/3 from same time in 2006
  • Yuma, AZ: apprehensions of undocumented workers down 66%; not crossing elsewhere
