Success Stories: Off-Duty USCG Petty Officers Rescue Pair from Fire

Situation   Action
  • Sault Ste Marie, MI: Petty Officers Damren & Peters are driving on Ashmun St. at 3:30 PM on 8-May-07
  • They see smoke and the rear of the building on fire
  • Petty Officer Damren immediately dials 911
  • As first responders to the scene, they encounter four people evacuating - two people are still inside…
 
  • Both petty officers enter the doorway and feel their way around the pitch black stairwell until they reach one victim, a mother, who is lying on the stairs
  • Meanwhile, the daughter is there with her, just a few steps above; both are unconscious from the smoke
  • Damren & Peters grab them, work their way back, take the women to safety in a nearby parking lot
Result   U.S. Coast Guard
  • Emergency Medical Services & the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department arrive on scene moments later
  • Both women are taken to War Memorial Hospital
  • The mother is sent to intensive care but makes a full recovery; the daughter is also treated and released
  • Damren & Peters experience only smoke inhalation
