OPM ASSIGNS VOTING RIGHTS EXAMINER FOR THE PRIMARY ELECTION IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA

Washington, D.C.--U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Janice R. Lachance today announced the assignment of a Voting Rights Examiner to the State of Arizona for the Primary Election being held there on September 7, 1999.

Voting Rights Examiners are federal employees assigned by OPM, under the authority of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, to receive complaints of racial or minority language discriminatory voting practices from persons in counties that have been certified for Examiners under the Act. The certified counties in the State of Arizona are: Apache; Navajo; and Yuma.

Any registered voter or other citizen of the counties listed above, who wishes to lodge a complaint of racial or minority language discriminatory voting practices may do so by calling the Examiner, toll free, at 1-888-496-9455 on Tuesday, September 7; on Wednesday, September 8; or on Thursday, September 9, 1999.

Written complaints may be mailed to:

Mailed complaints must be postmarked not later than Thursday, September 9, 1999.

Complaints of discrimination may be lodged at all times with the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice by calling, toll free, 1-800-253-3931. Complaints of discrimination also may be mailed to the Voting Section, Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice, P.O. Box 66128, Washington, D.C. 20035-6128.
