OPM e-Scholar Website Increases Educational Program Value to $700 Million

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) e-Scholar website today increased to $700 million, the total value and number of educational programs available. The website, www.studentjobs.gov/e-scholar.htm, and linked from OPM's USAJOBS website, contains hundreds of federal government-funded educational scholarships, fellowships, grants, internships, and cooperative programs.

"By providing instant access to federal educational programs through one website, the opportunities for students interested in serving the nation are just a click away," remarked OPM Director Kay Coles James. "E-Scholar is another important step in President Bush's efforts to make government more efficient and opportunities more accessible. E-Scholar also complements components of the President's Management Agenda."

New programs are posted daily, enabling browsers to find a program that best meets their needs. Currently, over 375 educational programs are available on the one-stop shop website. "Each federal agency with educational programs links them to the e-Scholar website, but there are more out there," remarked Major Barry Williams (USA), who oversees the website for Director James. "Searching out those educational opportunities is a daily job for me, and one I'm proud to do." Williams is serving at OPM under the White House Fellows program.

Because of the critical need for new talent, OPM's goal for e-Scholar is to promote a life-long connection between federal agencies and potential federal employees. OPM predicts a shortage of knowledge within the next few years, so e-Scholar was created to encourage a new generation of leaders to work for the federal government. "This website provides more exposure to the educational opportunities available by the federal government and encourages students to consider federal careers," James said.

OPM oversees the federal work force and provides the American public with up-to-date employment information. OPM also supports U.S. agencies with personnel services and policy leadership including staffing tools, guidance on labor-management relations and programs to improve work force performance.
