OPM DIRECTOR JANICE LACHANCE RECOGNIZED BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC FEDERAL EXECUTIVES

Washington, DCOffice of Personnel Management Director Janice R. Lachance was honored at the recent 1999 Agency Excellence Achievement Award Luncheon given by the National Association of Hispanic Federal Executives (NAHFE).

NAHFE recognized Director Lachance with a special award for her outstanding leadership in improving career opportunities for Hispanic Americans in the federal workforce. She was also the keynote speaker at the October 27 awards luncheon.

The award presentation and speech highlighted the October 26-29 Executive Leadership Development and Diversity Training Conference sponsored by NAHFE. The theme for the eighth annual conference was "Leading People."

In her address Lachance said, "I want you all to know that I have a deep admiration for the work that NAHFE is doing on the front lines of our diversity efforts, and I applaud your accomplishments in promoting equality, excellence, and opportunity. You can be very proud of your efforts.

"And let me say, on behalf of President Clinton and Vice President Gore, that we continue to share your goals, and we will continue to work with you to achieve them, and to support you in any way we can.

"As you know, OPM's Nine Point Plan, released in 1997, is a blueprint for developing recruitment and career development strategies, and also provides Federal agencies with helpful, practical guidelines for improving the representation of Hispanics in the Federal workforce.

"The impact of our 9-point plan has already far exceeded our initial expectations. Over 2,000 additional permanent Hispanic employees have been hired across the federal government since the plan was released. We believe it has become a driving force for increasing Hispanic employment in the federal civilian workforce."

The conference focused on the competencies involved in leading people and providing federal employees, at all grade levels and career fields, information for enhancing their job skills, promotion potential and ability to contribute to their agency's mission.
