Washington, D.C. Today more and more families are relying on some type of child care arrangement in order to meet the competing demands of work and family.
Recent Bureau of Labor Statistics figures indicate that more than 40 percent of American families have children under the age of 14. And in more than half of these families, either both parents work or the family is headed by a single, working parent.
In response to this pressing issue and to President Clintons March 10, 1998, directive to provide a nationwide forum to showcase model public- and private-sector solutions on child care needs, OPM will sponsor a summit at the Westin Crown Center, 1 Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri, on March 12-14.
The summit will bring together employers from the public and private sectors to discuss ways to achieve quality and affordable child care. Educators and child development experts will discuss how children learn. In addition, experts from both public and private sector will explain strategies and tactics in making child care affordable, while at the same time maintaining essential features of quality programs.
This Administration is committed to ensuring that every working parent has access to quality and affordable child care, said OPM Director Janice R. Lachance. The Child Care Summit will bring the best practices of federal, state, local government and the private sector to the forefront. And in the end, everyone wins.
Lachance is available for media inquiries regarding the summit.
