The USDA Hall of Heroes was established in September 2000 to recognize persons (living or deceased)/symbols that have had a direct and lasting impact on national/international agriculture and related programs. At the inaugural ceremony, four charter members were inducted: Hugh Hammond Bennett, Father of Soil Conservation; George Washington Carver, Father of Chemurgy; Senator Robert Dole, National Leader of Nutrition and Farming Programs; and Smokey Bear, America's Fire Prevention Bear.
