National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program
Descriptions of water-quality conditions in streams and ground water have been developed in more than a thousand reports (see bibliography). Many of the publications can be accessed through the USGS search site. Comprehensive summary reports, designed for a broad audience (USGS Circulars), were completed for each of the 51 Study Units and at the national scale on pesticides, nutrients, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These reports, written primarily for those interested or involved in resource management, conservation, regulations, and policy, related observed conditions to human activities, land use, and natural factors. Conditions also were compared to national water-quality standards, guidelines, and benchmarks to assess the potential effects on drinking water and aquatic life.
The USGS promotes public access to water-quality information, made available to you to help meet your water-resource needs.
