FEDERAL PERSONNEL LEAPS TOWARD PAPERLESS FUTURE

Washington, D.C. -- In response to the National Performance Review, a consortium of federal agencies led by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the Department of Defense, is developing the paperless personnel office. OPM Director Jim King and DOD Under Secretary for Personnel and Readiness Edwin Dorn will cut the ribbon on the model office located at:

Crystal Mall Number Two
1921 Jefferson Davis Highway
4th Floor
Arlington, VA
April 11, 1 p.m.

The automated personnel office will replace the current paper- and labor-intensive personnel office. It will bring enormous savings to the federal government and the U.S. taxpayer.

The personnel computer network will enable managers to rapidly and easily perform all core personnel activities from creating vacancy announcements, classifying jobs, and hiring applicants, to documenting and tracking all personnel actions via personal computer. The network includes a variety of state-of-the-art employment information and application entry systems to improve service to managers, employees and the public.

"Our focus is improved service to our customers--the American people, federal employees and retirees through the use of innovative and user-friendly automation," said Jim King.

Edward Dorn said he "fully supports the effort for sharing OPM's and DOD's advanced automated personnel systems throughout the federal personnel community."

For the first time agencies will be able to come to one location to see, feel, and touch first all of the tools of the paperless personnel world. The consortium has issued an open invitation to all agencies to join in this evolutionary project.
