The goal of the future Albuquerque trail and bikeway system is to get you from your home to the places you want to go - for work, shopping, school, play. Albuquerque has begun to develop a system of interconnected trails and on-street bikeways, but less than half of the planned network has been completed. This system serves two purposes, commuting and recreational travel. It will provide a low cost, non-polluting transportation alternative for people who can't drive or don't want to drive all the time, and needs to be a part of the whole picture in reducing vehicle miles driven and in protecting air quality and quality of life in Albuquerque. A city that supports bicycling and walking will be a much more livable city.

The quarter cent tax will build almost 50 miles of trails within the City and several major bicycle/pedestrian crossings over the river and the interstate. Included will be almost 7 miles of trail along I-40, 4 additional miles of the Unser Trail and extending the North Channel Trail 1.7 miles north to the Balloon Fiesta Park. This tax will support the completion of most of the primary off-street trails. Many other trail connections around the city will be built to provide important links to the existing trail and street system and to major destinations. It will also add several important sections of more natural trails in City Open Space areas and arroyos.
