SUPPLEMENTARY FILES FOR CD-ROM 2B Economic Censuses CD-ROM 2B has two known errors. 1. The SVC87KB.ndx is bad on both discs 1D and 2B, so that when adding kind- of-business labels to service data, some of the labels do not link correctly to the appropriate code. Inside CD2BSUPL.EXE is a replacement that should be put in your default directory. 2. In the MC87LZ2 file, the summaries for a number of New York ZIPs (11804-12543) are garbled. While it is not practical to supply a complete replacement file for MC87LZ2.dbf, the CD2BSUPL.EXE file gives you two alternatives, depending on how much hard disk space you are willing to devote to the replacement. MC87LZ2N.dbf includes all manufacturing total and 2-digit summaries for New York state, while MC87LZ2X.dbf includes only those summaries for affected ZIP codes. If you are using the manufactures zip data only at the 4-digit SIC level, so that you are working with MC87LZ4.dbf, then you do not have to worry about this problem. To install the contents of CD2DSUPL for use with EXTRACT: 1. Make your work directory on your hard disk the default, and run the CD2BSUPL program. For example, if your work directory is C:\EXTRACT\WORK and CD2BSUPL.EXE is on your A: drive, you would type C: CD\EXTRACT\WORK A:CD2BSUPL 2. Now copy SVC87KB.ndx into the default directory you use when you start EXTRACT COPY SVC87KB.NDX C:\EXTRACT 3. Many users will choose to retain only one version of the replacement files for the missing ZIP codes. MC87LZ2X.dbf, with only the affected ZIPs, requires only 58K of hard disk space, whereas MC87LZ2N.dbf requires more than 500K. If you want to make statewide comparisons across New York, the latter may be more convenient, but if you only want the affected ZIPs you can save 500K of storage space by deleting MC87LZ2N.dbf. (Do not delete MC87LZ2D.DCT or .DBT). 4. Add the MC87LZ2X and/or MC87LZ2N files to your MY_FILES catalog. a. Start EXTRACT as you usually do. b.
