OPM Director To Lead Presidential Effort on Training Technology in Federal Government

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Clinton today signed a new Executive Order entitled, Using Technology to Improve Training Opportunities for Federal Government Employees. The Executive Order establishes a Task Force on Federal Training Technology to be chaired by U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Janice R. Lachance. It also creates an advisory committee on the use of training technology.

The Task Force will provide leadership on the effective usage of technology in training and education in the federal government, ensure that training opportunities are an integral part of employment, and coordinate federal activities concerning the use of technology in training.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to chair the Task Force on Federal Training Technology which would ensure that federal employees receive the training they need to increase performance, advance their careers, and to meet the job challenges of the 21st century, said Lachance.

I am looking forward to working with the members of the Cabinet to develop effective strategies on technology training to ensure the success of this effort, Lachance added.

The Task Force will comprise the leaders of the following Departments and agencies: the Department of State, the Treasury, Defense, Justice, Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, Energy, Education, OPM, General Services Administration, Environmental Protection Administration, Social Security Administration, and other relevant agencies.

Earlier today Director Lachance joined Vice President Gore during a summit on 21st Century Skills for 21st Century Jobs in which he announced the forthcoming Executive Order and the creation of the Task Force on Federal Training Technology. The summit focused on providing workers with the skills necessary to compete in the workplace of the 21st century.
