OPM Director to Discuss Evolving Role of Human Resource Management

Washington, D.C. Office of Personnel Management Director Janice R. Lachance will speak about the evolving role of human resource management at a conference and exposition for public-sector human resource professionals. Her keynote presentation will take place on March 25 at 9:15 a.m. at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington.

Sponsored by Public HR and Human Resource Executive magazines, the Public Human Resource Management (PHRM) Conference and Exposition will provide public-sector HR directors with the latest strategies and best practices for managing all aspects of their jobs. The conference is scheduled for March 24-26.

As we move into the 21st century, OPM recognizes that our government will change, that the nature of work will change, and that the workforce will change. These 21st-century changes pose many challenges and opportunities for governance, for federal human resources management, and for employee development and learning, said Lachance. Our challenge is to respond to those changes and be ready to meet the learning needs of the new workforce.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management is the federal governments human resources agency. While daily providing the American public uptodate employment information, OPM ensures that the nations civil service remains free of political influence and that federal employees are selected and treated fairly and on the basis of merit. OPM supports agencies with personnel services and policy leadership including staffing tools, guidance on labor-management relations, preparation of governments future leaders, compensation policy development, and programs to improve workforce performance. The agency manages the federal retirement system, as well as the worlds largest employer-sponsored health insurance program serving more than nine million federal employees, retirees and their family members.

The PHRM Conference and Exposition will be the first truly national gathering of public-sector human resource professionals representing every level of government. Exhibitors and attendees will have a unique opportunity to meet face to face, to discuss specific solutions to public sector challenges.

We realize that we cannot anticipate every change the future holds, but we also realize that by emphasizing flexibility and innovation, we will be better able to adjust to any surprises the future may hold for us. We are not afraid to try new things and experiment with new processes.
