OPM Director Kay Coles James Praises Federal Civil Servants During Public Service Recognition Week

Washington, D.C. – Kay Coles James, Director of the Office of Personnel Management, marked the beginning of Public Service Recognition Week by praising the dedicated federal work force.

“President George W. Bush has expressed the Nation’s gratitude for the public servants who ‘touch lives, inspire others, and help us realize the promise and potential of our great Nation,’” said James. “I want to join the President in expressing my personal thanks for all you do as a member of our team in service to America.”

Earlier this year, OPM celebrated the 120th anniversary of the signing of the Pendleton Act, the legislation which gave birth to the Civil Service. Coinciding with the celebration, OPM updated and reprinted “Biography of an Ideal,” the proud history of the merit-based civil service system. Reflecting on this history, James said:  “Throughout our history, we have been blessed with men and women of vision and character who have devoted their time and talents in service to their country and their fellow citizens. You are following in the proud tradition of the long line of patriots for whom government service is a noble calling; who appreciate the honor and privilege of working for America. There is no more important work if you want to make a difference in our world today.

“It is particularly appropriate to remember, especially when we as a Nation pause to celebrate the accomplishments in Iraq, that the core values of our merit-based civil service include veterans’ preference and protecting public servants from prohibited personnel practices.”

During the week, OPM staff will provide information on a number of its programs, such as USAJOBS, Long-Term Care, Telework, E-training and Federal Employees Health Benefits. OPM also will host a number of events at its headquarters at 1900 E Street, NW, including an “employee of the day” and a BBQ for agency employees.

PSRW opening ceremonies were held on May 2 on the National Mall, with nationwide activities scheduled through May 11.

Details on specific events will be provided to reporters on request.
