ATSDR MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT

ATSDR To Hold Atlantic Station Redevelopment Site Public Availability Session

Public Comment Period Extended Through Nov. 30

For Immediate Release: Oct. 29, 2003

ATLANTA - The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, plans to hold a public availability session tomorrow to answer questions and discuss the public review and comment version of the public health consultation on the Atlantic Station Redevelopment site in Atlanta. The health consultation finds there is no apparent public health hazard from contamination on the site. The public comment period is being extended through Nov. 30.

The meeting will be held Oct. 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the United Steel Workers (USWA) Union Hall, 365 14th St., Atlanta. Members of the community are invited to attend the public availability session to talk one on one with ATSDR representatives concerning the results of the public health consultation and any possible site-related health concerns they might have.

ATSDR was petitioned to investigate the Atlantic Station site to address whether contamination left on site could pose a health hazard to future residents at the development or pose a hazard to the surrounding community during the construction phases of the project.

Comments on the public health consultation must be made in writing. Mail comments to

Chief, Program Evaluation, Records and Information Services Branch
ATSDR
1600 Clifton Road, N.E. (MS E-60)
Atlanta, GA 30333

Comments received during the public comment period will be logged in to the ATSDR administrative record for this health assessment.

Comments received, without the names of individuals who submitted them, and ATSDR responses to the comments will appear in an appendix to the final public health assessment. Names of those who submit comments, however, will be subject to release for requests made under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.

For more information, community members can contact Environmental Health Scientist James Durant or Community Involvement Specialist Rose Jackson, toll free, at 1-888-422-8737. Callers should refer to the Atlantic Station Redevelopment site in Atlanta.

ATSDR, a federal public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, evaluates the human health effects of exposure to hazardous substances.
