One of the objectives of the New Mexico Bureau of Mine Safety is to provide a safe and healthy workplace for miners in New Mexico, by reducing injury and illness in the mining industry.

To accomplish this, the Bureau of Mine Safety, located on the campus of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico, coordinates the safety and health training programs for all miners and contract workers at mining operations throughout the state. The program conducts education and training for miners at sand and gravel and stone operations, metal and nonmetal miners and contractors servicing all mines.

The program also supports 2 mine rescue stations. One is in the coal region of the state and the other is in the potash basin. They also sponsor the annual Southwestern Regional Mine Rescue Contest.

Mine health and safety classes are conducted in:

  • 30 CFR parts 46 and 48 Annual Refresher Training;
  • 30 CFR parts 46 and 48 New Miner Training;
  • 30 CFR part 49 Mine Rescue Training;
  • Certification and Qualification Training for Surface and Underground Coal Mine Foremen;
  • MSHA Approved Cooperative Instructor Training; and
  • 30 CFR parts 56 and 57 First Aid Training.
