State of Michigan Program Summary
Mr. Murray Gillis, Program Director Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Michigan Technological University Room 418, Minerals and Materials Engineering Building 1400 Townsend Drive Houghton, MI 49931-1295 The mission of the Michigan Mine Safety and Health Program administered by the Mining Engineering Department of Michigan Technological University is to develop safety and health education and training programs for occupationally-related miners within the State so as to prevent workplace accidents and occupational diseases. Program newsletters, workshops, and information on the State's INTERNET web site are way the program provides information to mine managers and supervisors on health and safety issues. Newsletters, mailed to all Michigan mines and mining contractors, serves as a medium to acquaint managers, supervisors and trainers with the resources and capabilities of the Michigan training program. The newsletters include resources available, training schedules, list of training videos in the lending library, and articles on State sponsored workshops designed to provide mine managers and supervisors with information on the importance of a safe and healthy workplace for long term profitability, the importance of communicating health and safety messages to employees, and supervisors' responsibilities under the Mine Act.
