The Forest Fire Laboratory in Riverside, California, is a field research facility of the Pacific Southwest Research Station, headquartered in Albany, California. The laboratory and research station are part of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Wildland fires spread during the notorious Santa Ana weather; the air pollution is among the worst in the world; and a large and growing number of people exert increasing demands on wildlands for a safe place to live, for water, for recreation, and for scenic beauty. Because of its location in southern California, at the heart of these natural resource problems, the Forest Fire Laboratory provides unique opportunities to study a variety of related topics that have local, national, and international importance. Researchers at the Forest Fire Laboratory cooperate with other Forest Service research stations and Federal agencies, State and county agencies, universities, and private organizations. Living With Fire in Chaparral Ecosystems: Tools for Decision Makers The Living With Fire in Chaparral Ecosystems project is a collaborative effort by the U.S. Forest Service, the UC Berkeley Center for Forestry, the UC Riverside Center For Sustainable Suburban Development, and the San Diego Natural History Museum, under the leadership of the Pacific Southwest Research Station, Forest Fire Laboratory, Riverside.
