Current Activities

Pat has been the director of the Resource Ecology and Fisheries Management (REFM) Division since 2005. Previously she served as a program manager of the Resource Ecology and Ecosystem Modeling program within the division. She spearheaded the trophic interactions research in that program, worked on integrating trophic interactions information into a variety of multispecies and ecosystem models, and developed an integrated ecosystem assessment report for Alaska’s marine ecosystems.

Pat’s main research focus has been to advance ecosystem approaches to fisheries management. This has involved a number of research activities including developing various ecosystem and upper-trophic level models of the North Pacific, understanding groundfish trophic interactions relative to marine birds and mammals, and developing ecosystem indicators and frameworks for communicating ecosystem change. Pat has authored more than 50 publications and has been involved in numerous research planning and science plan development efforts at regional, national, and international levels.


Background

Pat has a B.S. in Fisheries from Michigan State University, MS in quantitative fisheries management from the University of Washington, and MPA in natural resource administration and policy from the University of Washington. She has been an affiliate faculty member of the University of Washington, School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences since 1989. She has served in various capacities on scientific committees and programs of the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) including co-chairman of the Climate Change and Carrying Capacity Program and chairman of the PICES Science Board. She presently chairs the Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.
