BTS Journal Says Better Statistical Information Needed On Automotive Emissions

Tuesday, January 9, 2001 -- Improved statistical methods can contribute to more realistic solutions of automotive emissions
problems and to improved decision-making and policy setting, according to the new Journal of Transportation and Statistics released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of
Transportation Statistics (BTS).
"Protection of the environment will be one of the major challenges for transportation in the
21st century," Dr. Ashish Sen, BTS Director, said. "Sound statistical methods will
provide transportation decision makers with the information to develop better strategies to
improve our environment."
The Journal of Transportation and Statistics, a quarterly publication, contains seven papers
by noted academic experts on the statistical methodologies for measuring and analyzing automotive
emissions.
