The sixth step is to use bycatch prediction tools in field fishing experiments.  These tools include the use of RAMP (reflex action mortality predictor) and careful observations of fishing conditions.  Initially, appropriate reflex actions are identified for testing.  Then species of interest are exposing to relevant fishing conditions, RAMP is measured, and fish are caged to detect delayed mortality.  From these results, RAMP can be correlated with mortality and a RAMP curve can be calculated for each species.  Additional fishing experiments can then be conducted over a range of fishing conditions and the RAMP curves can be used to predict mortality without extended holding of fish in cages.  As data for fishing conditions, RAMP, and mortality is accumulated, statistical models can be constructed for prediction of bycatch mortality using information about fishing conditions.  RAMP can also be used for real-time evaluation of how changes in fishing practices increase or decrease discard and escapee mortality.  See our Quarterly Report Article on Reflex Impairment to Predict Mortality of Discarded or Escaped Fish Bycatch.

A conceptual diagram that outlines the steps and elements in the development of RAMP for bycatch discards or escapees in field fishing experiments.  RAMP could be measured in field fishing experiments for restrained fish to predict discard mortality, or for free swimming fish in cages to predict escapee mortality.
