To prevent these materials (which could be harmful if inhaled) from becoming airborne, ATSDR urges residents and building owners to continue to clean frequently using wet cloths, wet mops, and HEPA vacuums while wearing a dust mask and rubber gloves.
Asbestos was not found at levels of concern in residential air samples. Analysis of other possible airborne contaminants contained in residential area samples is still underway.
While the World Trade Center cleanup continues, ATSDR is recommending additional air and dust monitoring of residential units in lower Manhattan. For more information on the sampling and cleanup recommendations, please visit the NY Department of Health web site . The full report entitled, "Report on Residential Air and Dust Sampling in Lower Manhattan" is available in PDF or HTML.
