INTERAGENCY FIRE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT (IFPM)
In 2004, Federal firefighting agencies developed national requirements for 14 key firefighting positions. Training, education and experience requirements have been identified for each of these positions. Firefighters in these positions have until October 1, 2009, to meet these national requirements.
WILDLAND URBAN INTERFACE
Following the 2000 disaster in Los Alamos, New Mexico, known
as the Cerro Grande Fire,
the Forest Service began looking for ways to influence
fire behavior in Region 3 Wildland Urban Interface areas
so that future disasters may be avoided.
NATIONAL
FIRE PLAN
The National Fire Plan is a cooperative, long-term effort among various governmental agency partners for managing the impact of wildfire on communities and the environment.
FIRE

FIRE ECOLOGY CURRICULUM
Fire is an integral component of the forest in the Southwestern
Region. This curriculum uses fire as its central theme in
order to provide information and education on a vast array
of forest health and ecosystem management issues. The curriculum
is correlated to Arizona and New Mexico academic standards,
Forest Service conservation educator learner guidelines,
and Southwestern Region key messages.
FIRE
TECHNOLOGY
The tools and technologies of fire management have come a
long way since the Forest Service was first charged with protection
of the land in the early 1900s.
FIRE
TRAINING
A wide range of courses are available year-round for professional
wildland fire professionals to update their knowledge and
skills. Many of these courses are interagency in nature, others
are specific to the needs of the Forest Service.
WILDFIRE
PREVENTION
As interest in wildland fire and how it affects our lives
and the ecosystems around us grows, so have the resources
available to pass this information on to the public.
