About the Organization
New Hampshire's Connecticut River Valley Resource Commission,
created by the legislature in 1987, and Vermont's Connecticut
River Watershed Advisory Commission, similarly created
in 1988, were directed to cooperate with each other
to preserve and protect the resources of the Connecticut
River Valley, and to guide its growth and development.
They have met together as the Connecticut River Joint
Commissions (CRJC) since 1989. The thirty volunteer
Commissioners, fifteen appointed by each state, are
business people, landowners, conservationists, and citizens
who live and work in the Valley and are committed to
its future. By engaging local leadership and initiative,
and focusing resources to benefit the River and the
people of its Valley, the CRJC have worked to: create
a citizens' river corridor plan, improve water quality,
understand and stem shoreline erosion, provide grants
for river-oriented projects, create a Connecticut River
Byway, strengthen markets for Valley agriculture, negotiate
new terms for hydro dams, and bring information and
issues to the public.
About the Partnership
The Connecticut River Partnership has operated from
FY 2001 through 2003 through Congressionally-directed
appropriations to the NOAA Restoration Center. During
the first three years of the partnership, almost $900,000
of funds has been provided for activities in the Connecticut
River watershed. Partnership funds are utilized to implement
large special priority riverbank restoration projects.
Additionally, funds are used to grant competitively
selected sub-awards of $500 to $5,000. These grants
encompass a variety of issues important to the residents
of the Connecticut River Valley, including, but not
limited to: water quality, fisheries and wildlife habitat,
future land use, agriculture and forestry, environmental
recreation and education, and scenic byway implementation.
