Report of the U.S. Delegate, 20th Session of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils, Feb 19-23, 2007,
London, United Kingdom |
|
The United States
fully participated on all agenda items and was successful in achieving
most of its objectives and goals during this session. Some highlights
of U.S. effort include the committee's decision to reference the pertinent
tables of the General Standard for Food Additives in lieu of listing
all additives in the commodity standards. This action removes hindrances
to product innovation. The United States, supported by several delegations,
recommended discontinuing the elaboration of the "List of Acceptable
Cargoes;" however, the committee did not agree with this recommendation.
The United States was, however, able to convince the Committee that
there needs to be further discussion of the JECFA
Technical Committee recommendations on criteria to evaluate substances
to be included in the "List of Acceptable Cargoes." The
Committee agreed to further study the JECFA recommendations and delay
any on progress to advance the "list." Finally, the committee
failed to reach consensus on specification for linolenic acid in olive
oil. |
