Labor Market Information

The Labor Market Information LMI/Research and Statistics Section is the official source for all employment-related data for the state, the metropolitan areas, and the individual counties. The section works directly with the U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics to gather core labor market data that are comparable to information gathered nationwide.

Although we are best known for producing the unemployment rates, the scope of our services to employers and job applicants is far reaching. For example, if an employer wishing to expand or start a new business needs information on the available local labor force, including wage rates and skill levels, the LMI Research and Statistics Section can help.

Information that employers and job seekers may find useful includes the following:

Tennessee’s Workforce: Investing for Growth

The Source is the most comprehensive and user-friendly source of labor market data in the state.  The interactive system contains a vast amount of information covering areas such as job demand, economic indicators, wages, census data, and education/training programs. It also provides information on nearly 92,000 Tennessee employers.  Area profiles are also available by local workforce investment areas, metropolitan areas, and counties.

The Labor Market Report
This monthly newsletter contains a lead article on economic issues of importance to our readers. Current employment and unemployment statistics for the state and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) are analyzed. The newsletter includes tables and graphs of labor force information for the state, MSAs, and Micropolitan Areas. Data tables are also provided with estimated nonagricultural employment by industry, hours and earnings of manufacturing production workers, and the consumer price index.

Data

Business Employment Dynamics data are quarterly series of gross job gains and gross job losses statistics for the entire economy. These data track changes in employment at the establishment level, and thus provide a picture of the dynamics underlying aggregate net employment growth statistics.
