Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Programs Anne Petera

Anne Petera currently serves as the Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Programs, within the National Protection and Programs Directorate at the Department of Homeland Security. In this capacity, Mrs. Petera serves as a member of Secretary Michael Chertoff’s Senior Leadership Team, and has primary responsibility for managing the Department’s relationships with all state, local and tribal partners.   

From 2002 – 2006, Mrs. Petera served as Director of Administration for the Office of the Attorney General in Virginia.  There, she was responsible for an overall budget in excess of $24 million and a staff of approximately 97 full-time employees. 

From January 1998 – January 2002, Mrs. Petera served as Secretary of the Commonwealth in the Cabinet of Governor James S. Gilmore, III.  From January 1996 – January 1998, Mrs. Petera served as Chairman of the Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Board, under then Governor George F. Allen.  As the head of that Agency, she was responsible for over 900 employees and an annual budget in excess of $350 million.

Prior to her service in government, Mrs. Petera’s career in the private sector spanned twenty-six years, and included positions in Commercial banking, real estate sales, management, and adult education. Mrs. Petera served a term as president of the Richmond Chapter of the National Association of Bank Women.

Mrs. Petera served from 1994–98 on the State Board for Community Colleges and was elected as its vice-chairman.  She also served from 2000–04 on the Board of Visitors of her alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University where she was Vice-Rector, a member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Academic & Health Affairs Committee.  She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the VCU Health System Authority, where she served as Chair of the Audit Committee.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from VCU. Mrs. Petera was named an Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1981, and is currently listed in Who’s Who of American Women.
