Snow Storm Strikes West Texas

The winter season got a head start across much of West Texas during the early morning hours of
November 28th.  A strong, upper level storm system  helped to spread abundant mid level moisture across the area.  An unseasonably cold airmass already had its grips across much of the southern Plains, and the ingredients were set for a widespread late autumn snowfall.  The snowfall began during the evening hours of November 27th, and traveled from the Davis Mountains northeast through the central and eastern Permian Basin.  The heaviest snowfall occurred during the morning of the 28th, and gradually ended by the afternoon as the upper storm system moved east.
New snowfall records set by this storm include:

  • Record snowfall for November 27th
  • Record snowfall for November 28th
  • Record snowfall for the month of November

*Records are for the Midland International Airport and for the period 1930- 2001.
