Upcoming Meetings on RBI in Processing
The agency held a food safety summit on attributing illness to food on April 5 at George Mason University
in Arlington, Va. Sponsored by FSIS, the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, the food safety summit brought together scientific experts, consumer and industry
representatives, and other public health stakeholders to determine what attribution data exists, how to
improve attribution data, how to use attribution data more effectively and how to best share attribution data.
In its commitment to keep communication open and transparent, FSIS has scheduled a series of technical public
meetings to address specific issues raised by stakeholders during the development of risk-based inspection
in processing.
All of the meetings will be held in Room 244 of the George Mason University, Arlington Campus, 3401 N.
Fairfax Drive, Arlington, Va. Stakeholders will also be able to participate via audio conference.
Directions to the site, phone-in information, an agenda and other meeting materials will be posted on
FSIS' Web site at https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20080923052914/http://www.fsis.usda.gov.
The use of production volume data as a proxy for exposure is the topic for an April 25 meeting, while the
use of industry data in the risk algorithm will be the focus of a meeting on April 30. Both meetings will
be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The most current expert elicitation on inherent product risk will be completed this June and a public
meeting will be scheduled shortly thereafter. Details of this meeting are still being finalized; look for
more information on FSIS' Web site and in future issues of the FSIS Constituent Update.
