Educational Programming

The National Hansen's Disease Museum promotes the understanding, identification and treatment of Hansen's disease (leprosy) and expands students understanding of how people with physical disabilities live.

The Museum enables students to learn about

  • the history of contagious disease in the U.S.
  • changes in social attitude toward Hansen's disease (leprosy) as it transitioned from a "sin and curse" with mandatory quarantine to a bacterial infection that is curable with outpatient treatment
  • concepts including
    • multicultural education
    • medical history
    • Louisiana history
    • Hansen's disease
    • health
    • tolerance

Arrange a Visit

  • Guided driving tour of the Carville historic district grounds for school groups in buses.
  • Guided walking tour of the Carville historic district for school groups of 12 or less.
  • One adult chaperone per ten students required
  • Two weeks notice required.
  • Museum open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 am to 4 pm. Closed Federal holidays.
