The Southeast Alaska Science Fair (SASF) is an officially sanctioned member of Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The SASF, held in Juneau, Alaska, provides high school students in Southeast Alaska the opportunity to compete for scholarships and awards while learning to apply the scientific method to research questions. Each year the SASF has more than 120 projects competing for awards and the opportunity to advance to the ISEF. Projects that advance to the ISEF compete with more than 1500 students from 40 countries for over $3 million in prize money and scholarships.

The Auke Bay Lab (ABL) has become a major contributor to the success of the SASF. More than 25% of the ABL staff serves as mentors; projects generally take several months for students to complete. In addition, more than 50% of ABL staff serves as judges for the fair. ABL staff members represent a significant proportion of the fair’s board of directors and were responsible for developing the rules for judging. In the last five years at least one of the projects advancing to ISEF has been mentored by ABL staff and these projects have won prizes in three of the last five years.

For more information visit the SASF web site, or read about the 2006 SASF in the AFSC Quarterly Report (Jan-Mar 2006)
