REPRODUCTIONS, COPYRIGHT, AND NOTES TO RESEARCHERS

Photo Archives Reading Room
Images borrowed from the image collections may not be digitized, reproduced, or duplicated in any form or for any purpose. All requests for images intended for reproduction should be sent or faxed to the Office of Visual Services for approval. Correspondence should include details of planned usage, profit status, titles of works of art, and type of photography needed.

Copyright restrictions prevent the Image Collections from providing copy prints or granting publication permissions for the majority of the collection. Reproductions and permissions will be considered for images for which the Image Collections owns the copyright. Researchers are permitted to photocopy images from the collection for their own personal use. Collection photographs are not circulated, except to National Gallery staff and resident scholars.

With few exceptions, all acquired collections are interfiled into the Image Collections by artist or site rather than maintained as separate entities. Microform collections are kept as sets. The photographs are filed by several criteria in the following order: country, time period, artist, and subject (for example: Italian, Renaissance, Michelangelo, Bacchus). Architecture is filed by country, city, and building (for example: France, Paris, Hôtel des Invalides).
