Hybrid Plastics Receives R&D 100 Award

Fountain Valley, August 9, 2000:  Hybrid Plastics, LLC has announced receipt of an R&D 100 Award from R&D 100 Magazine for its proprietary POSS™ Nanostructured™ Chemical Technology. As one of an internationally selected number of new products receiving this prestigious award, POSS™ Nanostructured™ Chemical Technology- a nanoscopic silica- and carbon-based additive for plastics which offers more strength, heat resistance, and decreased flammability than traditional plastics-was recognized as one of the years most technologically significant products in the world. Entries from many of the worlds top companies, universities, and research organizations were judged by an independent panel of 70 experts from a variety of industries. Winners of the award were selected for their technological excellence and strength along with the value that they bring to the marketplace.

Nanostructured™ Chemical Technology promises to usher in the next generation of polymers, pharmaceuticals, and coatings. Originally developed to meet the Department of Defense’s (DOD’s) demand for light weight, ultra-high performance polymeric materials, POSS™ reagents, monomers, and polymers have been used in numerous applications ranging from rocket motors to medical prosthetics. POSS feedstocks are hybrid inorganic (silicon based) and organic (carbon based) systems, which can be viewed as discrete, chemically modified particles of silica (sand). POSS™ nanostrutures are unique in that they are truly nanoscopic (one billionth of a meter) in size and that they can be used as true chemical feedstocks rather than nonreactive clay or silica particles.

POSS™ nanostructured reagents, monomers, and Nanoreinforced™ polymers produce turnkey technology that works in existing manufacturing equipment, thus affording users of the technology immediate benefits. Hybrid Plastics’ Nanostructured™ Chemicals are currently distributed globally in the R&D chemicals market through Aldrich and Gelest chemical companies. Hybrid Plastics, who holds all intellectual property rights to the technology, is the only commercial supplier of Nanostructured™ Chemical Technology, and has joined with several industrial partners for specific R&D ventures and product developments.

The R&D 100 awards are sponsored by R&D Magazine and recognize the 100 most technologically significant new products and processes developed each year. Now in its 38th year, awards have been called both "The Oscars of Invention" and the "Nobel Prizes of Applied Research". Previous winners have included such breakthroughs as Polacolor film, the flashcube, the digital wristwatch, antilock brakes, the automated teller machine, the liquid crystal display, the halogen lamp, the fax machine and Fruitrim fat replacement.
