How NMFS Uses GIS

Protected Resource Management

NOAA Fisheries is also responsible for managing, conserving, and recovering populations of marine mammals and endangered/threatened species in waters under our jurisdiction. NOAA Fisheries' Protected Resources program uses GIS to identify and map species distribution, critical habitat, project locations, and observed interactions, to visualize the overlap of protected species and fishing effort, to plot survey effort and sightings data, to evaluate stranding events, and to conduct drift and bycatch analysis. These analyses allow NOAA Fisheries' Protected Resources program to develop and evaluate management alternatives and to provide for the conservation of these species.
