Lesson 8: Subject: Work Air Does.

Objective: The learner will be able to demonstrate the force of air on objects, such as parachutes, maple seeds, and pinwheels.

Time: Approximately 2 days. (45 minutes)

Small group or independently

Materials:

Computer to access the Internet

Pinwheel pattern for each student - Parachuting Pinwheel (entire activity)

Paper

Film canister

Glue or glue stick

Brads-Brass fasteners

Helicopter pattern for each student - Whirling Wonders (entire activity)

Scissors

Maple seeds (If in season)

2 Science Lab Observation Forms per student

 

Procedure:

1. Students will fill out Science Lab Observation Form. They will predict how the air makes the helicopter and pinwheel work.

2. Students will construct the helicopter and begin dropping it .

3. Students will record observations on Science Lab Observation Form.

4. Teacher will elicit various responses about the source of the helicopter movement.

5. Discussion will focus on force of air and its effect on the helicopter.

6. Closure: Evaluation filled out on Science Lab Observation Form. (Possible Break point)

7. Construct the pinwheel. (Pre punch holes in film canister lids)

8. Students will fill in the SLOF Prediction section.

9. Students will drop parachuting pinwheel.

10. Students will observe and record observations on SLOF.

11. Teacher will elicit various responses about the source of the pinwheel movement.

12. Discussion will focus on force of air and its effect on the pinwheel.

13. Closure: Evaluation filled out on Science Lab Observation Form.
