HorCon over benchmark
Horizontal Control
Knowing where you are in the world is critical to modern hydrographic surveys. FAIRWEATHER personnel use Horizontal Control (HorCon) stations to determine positions very accurately.
Aid to Navigation w/ HorCon equipment

High accuracy GPS receivers are placed over tidal benchmarks and aids to navigation for extended periods of time. Accurate positioning of these control points helps to tie the hydrographic data acquired by the FAIRWEATHER into standardized datums (reference points). The positions achieved by HorCon equipment can reach sub-centimeter accuracy.

DGPS Station

FAIRWEATHER can also use this equipment to broadcast its own Differential GPS (DGPS) correctors for use when U.S. Coast Guard DGPS sites are not available.

NOAA's National Geodetic Survey website has more informatin on datums and horizontal control.
