LOS ALAMOS, N.M., May 30, 2003 -- In an effort to demonstrate Los Alamos National Laboratory's continued commitment to small businesses in Northern New Mexico communities, the Laboratory is hosting a meeting June 4 to introduce to various government purchasing agencies small businesses that did work for Los Alamos' Cerro Grande Rehabilitation Project.

The networking meeting is at 12:30 p.m., in the Convention Center Dome at San Juan Pueblo north of Española on NM 68. Representatives from federal, state and local government agencies are scheduled to attend the meeting with CGRP contractors that performed work for the Laboratory.

Following the Cerro Grande Fire in May 2000, the Laboratory created the Cerro Grande Rehabilitation Project Office to rehabilitate more than 10,000 acres of Laboratory property burned in the fire, explained Teresa Trujillo of Los Alamos' Small Business Office, which is sponsoring the meeting with Los Alamos' Cerro Grande Rehabilitation Project and Community Relations offices. The Laboratory received $342 million from Congress for fire mitigation and rehabilitation efforts.

"As one of the Laboratory's major projects, the Cerro Grande Rehabilitation Project Office has made a significant impact, not only with the contracts placed in the local areas, but in enhancing relationships with local pueblos," said Trujillo. "The Laboratory was beneficial in providing assistance to them in growing their own businesses."

Trujillo said the Cerro Grande Rehabilitation Project Office, at its peak, generated more than 160 jobs in Northern New Mexico; 107 of these jobs were created between the 2001 and 2002 fiscal years with companies such as Clauss Construction, Tsay Corp., Cochiti, Jemez, Santa Clara and San Ildefonso pueblos and others.
