Rickman, jamesr@lanl.gov, (505) 665-9203 (02-133) LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Dec. 9, 2002 -- Officials at the U.S. Department of Energys Los Alamos National Laboratory have selected Jim Angelo to lead the Laboratorys Performance Surety Division. The Performance Surety Division, established earlier this year, assists Laboratory management in developing integrated systems and services that facilitate accomplishment of the Laboratorys national mission in a safe, secure and efficient manager. Los Alamos mission is to ensure the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce the global threat of weapons of mass destruction; and solve national problems in energy, environment, infrastructure and health security. Angelo is a former nuclear submarine commander for the U.S. Navy. Prior to his selection at Los Alamos, Angelo spent nine years in management positions at the Pantex Facility in Amarillo, Texas. We are pleased to have Jim Angelo at Los Alamos, said Jim Holt, the Laboratorys associate director for Operations. Jims extensive experience and knowledge in the areas of program manufacturing and operations management make him ideally suited to meet the challenges ahead. Angelo holds a bachelors in mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and a masters of science degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. From 1988 to 1991, Angelo served as Commander of the USS Augusta, a nuclear-powered attack submarine. Before receiving that commission, Angelo was executive officer of the USS Alabama, a Trident-class ballistic missile submarine. Before Angelo was named division director, Laboratory staff member Jim Loud served as acting leader of the Performance Surety Division. Associate Director Holt expressed his gratitude for Louds four months of leadership. Jim Loud did a truly outstanding job as acting director, and under his leadership, the Performance Surety Division made significant progress in furthering the Laboratorys position in crucial areas of quality management, occurrence reporting and work authorization, Holt said. In addition, he was instrumental in establishing a workable baseline budget for the organization. Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission. Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns.
