The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation/Division of Therapeutic Drugs for Food Animals is planning a scientific workshop on Swine Mycoplasmal Pneumonia to be held March 6-7, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel Kansas City, 1301 Wyandotte St., Kansas City, MO, 64105, (816) 474-6664.  The workshop immediately follows the Annual American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) Meeting (March 2-5, 2002), in Kansas City, Missouri. This workshop is a Public Meeting. The topic to be discussed is how to evaluate drug effectiveness against swine Mycoplasmal respiratory disease.

The Reason for the Workshop

The Division of Therapeutic Drugs for Food Animals needs to obtain scientific input from a broad public forum to determine an acceptable method for evaluating drug effectiveness against swine Mycoplasmal respiratory disease.  Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a major pathogen in “Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex” (PRDC).  PRDC is a significant problem in the swine industry in the US, and worldwide.  This workshop will provide a necessary forum for leveraging scientific resources, including top experts in swine Mycoplasmal pneumonia.  The workshop is part of CVM’s leveraging initiative aimed at increasing interaction with industry, academia, practitioners and other government agencies.

The Relevance of Swine Mycoplasmal Pneumonia to Food Safety: Prudent Antimicrobial Use

The best approach for treating M. hyopneumoniae is not yet known.  Veterinarians and swine producers lack scientifically supportable label directions for new animal drugs to treat Mycoplasmal pneumonia.  Veterinarians and swine producers are best equipped to protect the public health through prudent drug use practices when new animal drugs are approved and labeled to treat important disease conditions such as Mycoplasmal pneumonia.  FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine enables the availability of approved new animal drugs by clearly defining appropriate study design and data requirements.  This workshop will help protect the public health by accelerating the availability of approved, properly labeled new animal drugs.

You may register for the workshop through FDA electronic dockets .  The workshop docket number is 02N-0027.  If you have any questions about registration, please contact Mrs. Irma Carpenter (CVM) at 301-827-7580.
