APPENDIX C-12

VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION PLAN

This plan is from the FIPS PUB 101, June 1983, Guideline for Life cycle Validation, Verification, and Testing of Computer Software.

1.0      BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION

This section establishes the context for the V&V document. It is brief and introductory in nature. It focuses on those aspects of the problem and/or solution which influence the V&V needs and approach.

1.1      Statement of problem

Describe the problem in concise terms..

1.2      Proposed solution

Describe the proposed solution which influences the V&V needs and approach.

1.3      References/related documents

List all documents referenced in the plan or that impact the V&V effort. For selected significant documents, briefly describe how the referenced document impacts the V&V effort.

2.0      V&V REQUIREMENTS AND MEASUREMENT CRITERIA

This section presents the V&V requirements in one of several formats: the total V&V requirements, with all worksheets and phase information; a summary of requirements information; and a statement of project level information, with phase data presented later.

2.1      V&V Requirements and their Importance

Briefly describe the functional, performance, reliability or other requirements and why they are important to this system or subsystem.

2.2      Measurement Criteria for each Requirement

Briefly describe general, product specific or phase specific measurement criteria for the above requirements.

2.3      References/related documents

List any documents that the above might be referenced in (if a large document). These could be the SBD, CBA, Feasibility Study, etc.

3.0      PHASE BY PHASE V&V PLANS

First, describe the V&V approach by phases, products, major reviews and checkpoints, and practices common to all phases. Then present the specific activities to be carried out phase by phase.

3.1      Project Background and Summary Information

•      Project Phases and products
•      Major reviews (both management and technical)

3.2      Planning phase V&V Activities

For each phase, list the following information.

•      V&V activities
•      V&V techniques and tools selected
        °      reviews
        °       methods of analysis
•      Required support tools, automated & other
•      Roles and responsibilities
•      Schedules
•      Budgets
•      Personnel

3.3      Requirements Analysis Phase

3.4      Design Phase

3.5      Development Phase

3.6      Integration and Test Phase

3.7      Implementation Phase

3.8      Operations and Maintenance Phase

Appendix A Project and Environmental Considerations
            A. Technical Issues
            B. Project Constraints
            C. Computing Resources

Appendix B Technique and Tool Selection Information
            A. Candidate list of techniques and tools
            B. Rationale for selection of techniques and tools
