Scientists are particularly interested in Saturn's moon Titan because it's one of the few known moons with its own dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is also thought to be very similar to what Earth's atmosphere was a long time ago. By learning about Titan, we'll learn about our own planet.

Shuttle Prepares for Launch

The countdown proceeds on schedule for Thursday's launch of Space Shuttle Discovery. Commander Scott Horowitz and Pilot Rick Sturckow will practice landings in the specially-modified Shuttle Training Aircraft late this afternoon. The Rotating Service Structure will be rolled away from Discovery tonight. Forecasts call for a 60-percent chance of favorable weather conditions Thursday. The mission will bring the International Space Station its third crew, and take the second station crew home. The new station crew will spend four months researching the effects of living in space. The Shuttle astronauts will also use the brief trip to measure the effects of spaceflight on immune function and spatial orientation. Understanding how Earth life responds to conditions in space is one of astrobiology's primary goals.

The launch is scheduled for 2:28 p.m. Pacific (5:28 p.m. Eastern/2128 GMT), and will be webcast live by NASA TV and its mirror sites. Check the NASA TV schedule for details and updates.
