NASA Selects In-Space Propulsion Innovations For Research
NASA has selected 15 industry, government and academic organizations to pursue 22 innovative propulsion technology research proposals that could revolutionize exploration and scientific study of the solar system. The five areas of in-space propulsion technology included in the new research proposals are aerocapture, advanced chemical propulsion, solar electric propulsion, space-based tether propulsion and solar sail technologies.
Such technologies will make future space travel more efficient and cost effective, opening the door for the exploration of distant locations like Mars and Europa. Missions to Mars and Europa are important for determining the potential for past or present life beyond Earth.
