Scientists are particularly interested in Saturn's moon Titan because it's one of the few known moons with its own dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is also thought to be very similar to what Earth's atmosphere was a long time ago. By learning about Titan, we'll learn about our own planet.

All-Terrain Rovers May Scale Mars' Cliffs

NASA researchers are developing new prototype robots that can drive up steep hills and descend almost-vertical cliffs. Working alone or as a team, these autonomous robotic explorers may go where no rover has gone before—the cliffs of Mars. In selecting landing sites for Mars missions, planners have generally been limited to flat terrain, where landers can touch down safely, and rovers can move about easily. But some of the most scientifically intriguing terrain on Mars is uneven or steep. Photographs taken by the Mars Global Surveyor show what may be water seepage from cliffs. And canyon walls may expose geologic layers, which provide a window into a planet's distant past.

In a recent demonstration, two "tether-bot" rovers stationed themselves at the cliff's edge, supporting a third steerable "cliff-bot" as it actively descended and ascended the steep terrain. "They're a true team," said Dr. Paul Schenker of the robotics program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "They communicate instantaneously, make mutually informed decisions and jointly implement their control actions." The researchers have also successfully developed and demonstrated an all-terrain rover that can traverse sandy natural terrain on slopes of 40 to 50 degrees. "These technology advances should enable broader robotic exploration of planetary surfaces, letting rovers truly follow the water, thus giving us a better look at possibilities of past or present life on Mars," said Schenker.

Dr. Schenker will discuss the robots live on the web on Thursday, December 20, from 12 noon to 4 pm Pacific (3-7 pm Eastern/2000 Thursday to 0000 Friday GMT). Watch the webcast live on NASA TV and its mirror sites. Check the NASA TV schedule for details and updates.
