Caregiving Initiative

The Goal:  To access the type of programs across the Department of Health and Human Services that address the needs of formal and informal caregiving and caregivers in order to help identify gaps, duplications and areas for enhancement leading to program and budget policy caregiver recommendations.

The Collaborators: The DHHS Office on Disability (OD) and the NFI Caregiver Subcommittee is working in collaboration with all agencies within the Department.

The Mechanism:  Collaborating HHS agencies have submitted information regarding their programs for a descriptive analysis of formal and informal caregiving programs.  The descriptive analysis identifies how each agency defines and provides caregiving. It is meant to help identify gaps, duplications and areas for enhancement leading to program and budget policy caregiver recommendations

The New Freedom Initiative Caregiver Support Workgroup was established to identify and coordinate existing caregiver support activities across agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The workgroup is a sub-group of the HHS New Freedom Initiative staff group that was established to respond to the President’s Executive Order on Community-Based Alternatives. Several solutions outlined in the report to the President, “Delivering on the Promise,” seek to enhance HHS support of family caregivers of people with disabilities of all ages. The workgroup plays a leadership role in promoting these solutions as well as coordinating overall HHS caregiver support activities.

The Caregiving Initiative exemplifies the unique Office on Disability role in obtaining cross-agency caregiver program and fiscal information to help direct future program and budget policies.
