In Memoriam: Jay Turnbull

Turnbull Family picture

AUCD joins others in the disability community in mourning the loss of Jay Turnbull. Jay was the son of Ann and Rud Turnbull, founders of the Beach Center on Disability at Kansas University, a center affiliated with the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies and the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities. Jay passed away of natural causes Wednesday morning in his home.

After receiving a diagnosis of multiple intellectual disabilities at a young age, Jay inspired his parents to research systems to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. The stories Ann and Rud shared about Jay in their work to promote inclusion and opportunities for people with disabilities touched many lives worldwide.

The thoughts and prayers of AUCD are with Jay's family and friends.

Other issues discussed included Medicaid home and community-based supports, early intervention, and the importance of disability research as an economic stimulus. AUCD Board President Michael Gamel-McCormick stated, "The Obama transition team has been both thoughtful and comprehensive in reaching out to members of the disability community in order to identify a broad range of issues impacting the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. With our disability partner organizations we were able to communicate the importance of programs, research and support for persons with disabilities as they are part of the economic recovery and improvement of health care, education and other primary programs effecting all Americans."
